The world shut down in March 2020 and will never be quite the same. Those who lived through the COVID-19 pandemic will never forget it. It’s hard to believe now, but someday this pandemic will be as distant as the 1918 influenza pandemic is today. To help preserve the history of this time, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library invited the community to contribute their pictures, writing, and objects that show what life was like here in the Spring and Summer of 2020.

This digital collection contains images and writings that were on display from October 9th to November 29, 2020 in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. They include pandemic-related topics such as masks and protective equipment, empty shelves at stores, personal stories of life and death, as well as topics related to Black Lives Matter and the outcry against racism and civil rights violations over the summer of 2020. The hope is that future generations will use these materials to better understand this time and how it affected the local community.
