DescriptionOn June 8, 1966, Topeka was struck by a massive tornado. Registering as an F5 on the Fujita scale, the powerful storm traveled across the city from the southwest to the northeast, carving a path of destruction 21 miles long and one-half mile wide. The tornado resulted in the deaths of 17 people and more than $104 million in damage. One of the hardest hit areas was the campus of Washburn University, where much of the campus was damaged or destroyed.
