DescriptionThe Topeka State Hospital (formerly the Topeka Insane Asylum) was established in 1879 to provide mental health treatment to those living in the thirty-six counties in the northeast third of the state. This complex of buildings was located at 2700 W 6th Street and over time, established wards to treat adults, adolescents and children. At one time, a tuberculosis hospital for the mentally ill was located on the grounds.
